800 cannabis plants found growing on industrial scale

An unnamed person who was held in police custody from 4 until 18 July has now been charged with offences in relation to the Narcotics Act after police discovered 800 cannabis plants growing “on an industrial scale” on a farm on the edges of the municipality.

Speaking on behalf of the Zug Police, Judith Aklin said that the indoor cultivation of the plants was discovered two weeks ago. Apparently, the farmer owner of the property, which he had let out, knew nothing of any such cultivation. A journalist of the Zuger Zeitung tried to contact him by telephone on Tuesday but to no avail.

As mentioned, no details of the person arrested, neither his name, his age nor his nationality, have been released. However, as Aklin confirmed, if convicted, he could face a prison sentence of up to three years or a fine. He has also been charged with being in possession of 1.4 kilogrammes of marijuana.

The spokeswoman declined to say how the police’s attention was drawn to the farm. It is not known therefore, whether information came from a member of the public in the vicinity. A number of locals had noticed how, in winter, snow never seemed to settle on the roof of the building where the plants were found, an indication, perhaps, of the higher temperatures prevailing in order to grow them.

It was in March last year that the police came across 30 cannabis plants growing in a flat in Rotkreuz and as many as 700 in an industrial building in Baar in February in 2015.

The canton of Zug made headline news across the country in November 2014 after police arrested 15 people and confiscated 55 kilogrammes of heroin as a drug-smuggling ring importing drugs from Turkey was smashed. This had been going on for two years and involved 300 kilogrammes of drugs worth CHF 10 million at street prices.
