Open day at many places of interest

On the occasion of Swiss National Day on Friday 1 August a large number of places of interest in the city will be open free of charge.

These include the Huwilerturm and the Pulverturm (historic towers). The former is open from 10 am until 3 pm and the latter is open from 10 am until 4 pm. Refreshments (rather special ones) are available at both of them.

The Kapuzinerturm (Capuchin Tower) and monastery garden are also open between 10 am and 4 pm, though the cloisters can only be visited as part of a guided tour.

The Kunsthaus Zug art gallery will also be open between 10 am and 5 pm and the historic Stadthaus (town hall) on Kolinplatz will be open from 10 am until 4 pm, where visitors will be able to see the beautiful room where marriages can be held.

Both the Africa and Fishery Museums are open from 10 am until 4 pm. The former, at number 17 St Oswaldgasse, will be showing examples of African art while an exhibition about Lake Zug is on at the latter. Some beautiful photographs of the lake can also be seen at the doku-zug centre at number 16 St Oswaldsgasse between 10 am and 5 pm. The Museum of Pre-History, where visitors will be able to see a number of archaeological artefacts as well as see what an oven at the time of the stilt-buildings looked like, will be open from 10 am until 5 pm.

There is an extensive exhibition about Lake Zug (Seesichten Zugersee) running until the end of the Summer at doku-zug.ch. The exhibition covers themes ranging from the history of its settlement, natural catastrophes, the fishery, the lake shore as a social gathering point, private and public land use and the health of the lake.

The exhibition is illustrated by newspaper articles, historical documents and photographs by Andreas Busslinger from Baar, Zug.

This Friday, August 1st, there will be on-going English guided tours of the exhibition starting at 10 am

Expats will be particularly be pleased to note that there will be a special service held in conjunction with the Anglican Church at the Reformed Church in Zug. English-speaking visitors will be welcomed in their own language at 11.15 am, though the service itself starts at 10.15 am after a peal of bells at 10 am. Refreshments will be served from 11 am onwards and between 12.30 and 2 pm there will be the opportunity to visit the bell tower.

The following places of interest are also open but can only be visited as part of a guided tour:
the Museum Burg Zug, the Zurlaubenhof (manor house) at number 5 Hofstrasse, the Maria Opferung Convent at number 2 Klosterstrasse, the Villa Stadlin (beautiful lake-side residence built in 1895 as shown in the photograph) at number 19 Artherstrasse as well as the Rathaus am Fischmarkt, the Zytturm (clock tower), and the premises of the Zug Corporation (with a table cloth made in 1570 on display) at number 11 Unter Altstadt.

What may be of particular interest to expats is a guided tour of the Old Town in English by Marilyn Buchamnn at 2.30 pm, starting from the information stand on Landsgemeindeplatz.
