Tricksters operating in canton again

The police have issued a warning about pickpockets and other tricksters who have been particularly active in the canton in recent days.

Tricksters approach people asking them if they have any change, taking the opportunity to help themselves to banknotes as the victims look through their purse for coins. So skilful are the thieves in the way they do this that it can hardly be noticed. In some cases it is only later that victims realise what has happened, by which time the tricksters have long since disappeared.

In order to help prevent this type of theft, the police have issued to following advice.

Be particularly alert if you are suddenly asked by a stranger on the street for directions or the time.

Do not let yourself be distracted by the tricksters in any way. It is known they are are very skilful in doing this, going on to steal victims’ valuables in a way which is scarcely noticeable.

Do not allow strangers even to look into your wallet, let alone allow them to “help themselves” to coins or notes.

After having been approached by someone wanting something, do not concentrate solely on what they are saying, be alert to what is going on around you, too.

Keep your distance to such people and make it clear to them you do not want them to approach too closely. Be very sceptical, especially about any exaggerated thankyous they may give.

As a general rule, the police advise carrying as little cash as possible on one’s person. It is best to carry any valuables in a closable pocket on the front inside of a jacket, and certainly not in a visible way as in the photograph.

If you realise you have been the victim of trickery or notice others who have been, make a mental note of the description of the offender and the direction in which he fled and call the police on 117 without delay.
