Variable maximum speed limiits to apply

The Swiss Federal Highways Department (ASTRA) has announced that variable maximum speed limits are to apply on a section of the A14 motorway.

The section concerned is that between the Rathausen tunnel to the north of the city of Lucerne and the Rütihof intersection in the canton of Zug, and in both directions.

CHF 5.2 million is to be spent on the necessary equipment to indicate what the maximum speed, ranging from 80 kph to 120 kph, depending on the volume of traffic, will be; in fact a limit of 60 kph could apply at times.

Such a move was felt necessary because of the incidence of accidents on this 12-kilometre stretch.

In order to set up the equipment, ASTRA plans to close the motorway at night between Monday 23 and Sunday 29 October prior to it being tested in November and December. Permanent operation is expected to the ensue early in 2018. It is hoped that, once it is up and running, fewer accidents involving vehicles crashing into the back of others in particular will occur.

At present speed is regulated in this way on 345 of the 1,840-kilometre national motorway network.
