Weapons amnesty brings in 91 firearms

Last Saturday the Zug police organised an amnesty whereby weapons could be handed in; no questions asked.
This year’s amnesty was particularly successful, with no fewer than 91 firearms and one grenade handed in.

Among the weapons handed over were various types of rifles, including assault ones, a number of guns, including air guns in addition to pistols and bayonets, not to mention a hand grenade dating back to World War I. Apart from these weapons, 45 kilogrammes of ammunition was also turned in, too.

Not surprisingly, with such an arsenal handed over, it is not surprising the police concluded that this year’s amnesty was particularly effective. Since the amnesties were inaugurated in 2008, as many as 3,000 weapons and 600 kilogrammes of ammunition have been handed over, all of it appropriately disposed of.

Although these amnesties are organised on an annual basis, the police would like to make it clear that weapons can actually be handed in at any time.

Beat Villiger, the director of public safety in the canton, was also pleased with the amnesty’s success, now there are fewer weapons in circulation.
